Phoenix Center for The Arts: What The River Knows

Phoenix Center for The Arts: What The River Knows

Glen Canyon Institute presents What the River Knows, a Good Intentions Paving Co. documentary exploring the reemergence of Glen Canyon from the receding waters of Lake Powell reservoir. As the West faces the urgent need to redesign water management, we are offered the chance to restore one of the planet’s most stunning landscapes. What the River Knows explores this unique reflection point in a centuries-long history, weaving together past and present to reveal a new way forward for the Colorado River.

The evening will open with a screening of Tad’s Emerging World, a short film by Dawn Kish. Tad Nichols is often referred to as “the Ansel Adams of Glen Canyon” for his images that captured the beauty of the canyon before the construction of Glen Canyon Dam. In 2021, equipped with Tad’s original 4×5 Crown Graphic camera both as a tool and as inspiration, Kish returns to the Glen to document and share the canyon’s next chapter.

After the film screening, the event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring:

  • Alex Hager (Colorado River Reporter)
  • Dawn Kish (Filmmaker and Photographer)
  • Georgie Pongyesva (Hopi Cultural Preservation Office)
  • Dave Wegner (Water Scientist and Policy Writer)
  • Glen Canyon Institute
