City Center Starr Awards



The Center City Champion Award was established by the Phoenix Community Alliance (PCA in 1993 to honor men and women who have made outstanding contributions to Phoenix's Central City.

The word champion signifies an advocate for the betterment of humanity and the environment. A center City Champion is an advocate in every sense of the word. These individuals have long validated the interdependence of our community and recognized and supported all the vital links to asssure our quality of life and preserve our rich heritage.

In 1997 the award was renamed the Center City Starr Award to give special recognition to the late Barry Starr. As PCA president, Phoenix city councilman, assistant to Governor Rose Mofford, president of Valley Big Brothers and a Phoenix police officer, Barry Starr's career exemplified this honor.

Award recipients meet annually to select at least one candidate from the public and private sectors respectively.

The Center City Starr Award honors individuals who:

  • Consistently lead and challenge the community to continued quality growth and development.

  • Unfailingly support the commitment and efforts of business, government, educational, cultural, civic and religious organizations, neighborhood groups, property owners and individuals to revitalize Phoenix's Central City and surrounding neighborhoods.

  • Tirelessly devote their time, talent and resources to the betterment of Phoenix's Central City.


  • This year, we will be honoring:

    Mike Ebert, Managing Partner,
    Red Development
    Linda Hunt, President & CEO,
    St Joseph's Hospital & Medical Center
    Michael Crow, President
    Arizona State University (Will be honored at a later date)

    Mayor Phil Gordon will receive the Skyscraper Award to recognize his outstanding contributions during his tenure as Mayor.
